Xinying Zhao is a research scientist and behavioural change designer.

Research Profile👩🏻‍💻

Xinying's early research interest focused on social cognition, among which she studied the phenomenon of acting cute and spontaneous trait inference in social interactions.
She actively developed her capability in user experience design and seized the opportunity to learn design for behavioural change in TU Eindhoven with the support from "BrainBridge” project sponsored by Philips Research in 2018. In 2020, she began her career in Philips Research China as a research scientist for patient engagement and behaviour change. She explored persuasive communication, behavioural change wheel, and motivational interviewing in enhancing patient engagement. With research direction transition from academia to industrial, she is now motivated to design digital therapeutics for chronic disease patients and patients with mental disorders.
In 2023, she joined the Postdoctoral Research Station in Design Studies at the College of Computer Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, and the affiliated workstation at the Affiliated Mental Health Center, Zhejiang University School of Medicine / Hangzhou Seventh People’s Hospital, where she has conducted interdisciplinary research at the intersection of psychiatry and human–computer interaction. Her research interests focus on investigating abnormal respiratory physiological characteristics in patients with anxiety disorders in real-world settings, and further exploring the effects of brief breathing-based micro-interventions on anxiety relief in daily life. In addition, her research projects also involve the application of large language model technologies in psychological assessment and the use of closed-loop acoustic stimulation to enhance deep sleep.

欣颖的早期研究兴趣聚焦于社会认知领域,她研究过社交互动中的“卖萌”以及“自发特质推理”现象。
她主动培养了自己用户体验设计方面的能力。2018年,在飞利浦研究院资助的“智慧桥”项目的支持下,她得以前往埃因霍温理工大学学习行为改变设计。2020年,她以患者健康参与度与行为改变研发工程师的身份加入了飞利浦中国研究院,探索过劝导式沟通、行为改变轮、以及动机式访谈等理论/技术在增进患者健康参与度方面的应用。在研究方向由学术向工业界转变的影响下,她热衷于设计数字疗法,特别是为慢病和受心理问题困扰的患者提供数字健康解决方案。
2023年,她加入浙江大学计算机科学学院设计学博士后流动站与浙江大学医学院附属精神卫生中心/杭州市第七人民医院工作站,在精神医学与人机交互交叉学科领域开展研究。她的研究兴趣聚焦于在真实世界场景中探究焦虑障碍患者的异常呼吸生理特征,并在此基础上在日常生活中探索运用呼吸微干预对焦虑缓解的作用。此外,她的研究项目还涉及到大语言模型技术在心理测评中的应用、利用闭环声波刺激提升深度睡眠等。

Xinying Zhao graduated from the School of Psychology of South China Normal University with B.S., Applied Psychology in 2015. She received M.Ed., Psychology from the Department of Psychology and Behavioral Science of Zhejiang University in 2018. She further studied the User System Interaction program in Eindhoven University of Technology and obtained the Postgraduate Doctorate in Engineering in 2020.In 2023, she joined the Postdoctoral Research Station in Design Studies at the College of Computer Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, and the affiliated workstation at the Affiliated Mental Health Center, Zhejiang University School of Medicine / Hangzhou Seventh People’s Hospital. Her research focused on “real-world studies of patients with mental disorders in non-medical settings.” She successfully completed her postdoctoral research in 2026.
